Program Overview
SDFC Summer Soccer provides the opportunity for motivated young players to develop their game within a well organized program under the expert guidance of dedicated and proven professional coaches. SDFC Summer Soccer is entirely supplementary to regular club programs and will NOT conflict with travel soccer commitments. The program is designed for those looking for additional soccer development during the summer vacation period.
The major purpose of SDFC Summer Soccer is to promote player development through high level training and playing opportunities, by providing a thorough curriculum which tests the players in every aspect of the game of soccer. The birth year split allows everyone to get a chance to see how Fall Soccer will shape up.
The birth year change will take place as of August this summer. This allows some flexibility and SDFC are willing to work with all players to ensure everyone has a fantastic summer.

What is the new birth year age group system?
Birth Year refers to players born between January 1st and December 31st. To follow the standards for field dimensions, tournament and league play, the "U..." system will still be in effect. For 2016-2017, the age groups will be (click here for full age group chart):
- U7 - players born in 2010
- U8 - players born in 2009
- U9 - players born in 2008
- etc etc
Why are the USSF mandating the change?
From Tab Ramos (USSF Youth Technical Director) "It puts our players on the same age-playing calendar as the rest of the world so they will be used to competing in the right age group. That makes it much easier for us to scout for the National Teams and find players ready to compete internationally."
Does this apply to both boys and girls?
Yes.
Does a player HAVE to play in the birth year or can they "play up"?
Similar to the current system, if it is developmentally appropriate, players will be given the opportunity to play up. As we transition into the age group change we do envisage that there will be increased opportunities for players to "play up" as they remain with their current "age group". One of US Soccer’s primary directives is for players to play up an age group if their club feels their talent dictates this. We have always tried to do this at SDFC in the best interest of individual development and will continue to do so with the new classifications on a case by case basis.
